Heavies & Special Mission Aircraft

The aircraft featured in this gallery represent some of the most capable and versatile machines operating in the world today. From strategic airlifters and aerial refuelling tankers to airborne early warning platforms, maritime patrol aircraft, and specialised mission systems, these aircraft rarely receive the same public attention as fast jets, yet they are often the backbone of modern air operations. Their ability to transport personnel and equipment, provide intelligence and surveillance, coordinate complex operations, and project capability across vast distances makes them essential to both military and humanitarian missions.

My interest in these aircraft comes not only from a lifelong passion for aviation, but also from an engineering and operational perspective developed during my military career. Having worked in fleet-level electronic warfare roles and previously as an avionics technician on Army helicopters, I have always been fascinated by the systems, sensors, communications equipment, and mission capabilities that transform an aircraft from a simple transport platform into a force multiplier. While many people admire the size and presence of aircraft such as the C-17A Globemaster III, E-7A Wedgetail, KC-30A MRTT, or P-8A Poseidon, I find equal enjoyment in understanding the technology and operational concepts that sit behind them.

Many of the aircraft featured throughout these galleries also appear in my colouring book, Heavies of Avalon, which was inspired by aircraft I photographed at recent Avalon International Airshows. The book celebrates the impressive variety of heavy airlifters, tankers, maritime patrol aircraft, command-and-control platforms, and other specialised aircraft that visit Australia, while these galleries showcase the real aircraft in their operational environment. The photographs below capture aircraft from Avalon 2019 and 2023, providing a unique record of some of the most impressive heavy and special mission aircraft to visit Australian skies. Whether you’re an aviation enthusiast, engineer, modeller, defence professional, or simply someone who appreciates large and capable aircraft, I hope you enjoy exploring the collection.
